Musical Director //  Rory Stuart  \\  Guitarist

"Named as one of the greatest living jazz guitarists ('The Great Jazz Guitarists' by Scott Yanow), the New Yorker calls him a 'stunning guitarist.'"

As an Educator

He is also a noted educator, who designed and leads the rhythm curriculum at the Department for Jazz and Contemporary Music at New School University, where he has received the school’s highest honor (Teaching Excellence Award).  He has directed jazz workshops in Italy and Korea, and taught clinics and workshops around the world; a list of his former students reads like a “Who’s Who” of rising young jazz stars.

As a Musician

Rory has led groups whose recordings have received 4 stars (Downbeat) and been voted 10 best of the year (Coda). As a sideman, he has played with a wide range of artists, from Thelonious Monk's saxophonist Charlie Rouse, to legendary organists such as Bill Doggett and Brother Jack McDuff, to Steve Coleman's early MBASE group in the 1980's with Cassandra Wilson and Geri Allen. He has led and co-led groups with artists such as George Garzone, Billy Harper, John Ellis, Mark Shim, Ari Hoenig, Obed Calvaire, Marcus Gilmore, John Riley, Dafnis Prieto, Keith Copeland, and Reggie Workman. He has also led concerts featuring former students including Robert Glasper, Becca Stevens, Matt Penman, Mike Moreno, James Francies and Mike Rodriguez.

The recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Meet the Composer, as well as a Fulbright Scholar Award (2013-2014), Rory has performed all over the world, including India, Chile, Denmark, Israel, Greece, Korea, Brazil, Italy, Sweden, Columbia, Austria, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Argentina, Spain, Canada, and Iceland.

Described by Jazz Times as "perhaps THE most innovative straight-ahead jazz guitarist to emerge in years…,"
